Making the Most of that Final Day in Turkey

It is one of the notorious downsides to almost any holiday, and often leads to the post-holiday blues hours before even setting off to the airport for the return flight home. It is, of course, the final day of a holiday, where packing up and moving out have a habit of looming over the final sun-filled hours like a good old British rain cloud.

As hard to leave as any destination is Turkey; fast emerging as one of Britain’s favoured destinations filled with some striking beaches and rich culture. Many Turkey holidays have flights that depart home late at night or during the early hours of the morning, such as those flying from Manchester to Dalaman with Fly Monarch.

Of course, timings like this mean getting to the airport between early and late evening; the rest of that final day is steadily building up to this sombre event and it is unsurprising that people can often find it hard to relax and enjoy the final hours of their trip. The very nature of packing means it’s usually left to the last minute, with things forgotten and remembered in one ramshackle minute; there’s not enough space to fit in all the souvenirs that have been bought, anmd children refuse to get ready because they would rather be making a last minute dip in the pool.

But the tour operators working from Dalaman airport to the surrounding Lycean coast resorts of Oludeniz, Hisaranu, and Fethiye - some of the most popular in Turkey - have developed an ingenious way to make the most of that final day. Nicknamed the Dalyan Transfer, and sold as a trip in most hotels and resorts, is a way of taking the hassle out of the last day. Guests are collected in the morning along with their luggage and checked-out. They are then taken on a long day trip to Dalyan, a great place to spend a day. Dalyan is the site of Lycian tombs cut into the cliff-side that date from 400BC and have ornamental facades carved into the rock-face. A popular way to see these tombs and the ruins of the ancient city Kaunos, across the river, is to cruise by on a boat.

Later in the day, after a barbecue lunch, guests are taken to the huge sandbar Iztuzu beach, which sits between the river mouth and the sea, and is very popular with swimmers and sunbathers. After a good dose of sea and sun, guests are then taken to relax with a drink and evening meal at local restaurants without having to worry about getting to the airport. And finally, when the time to go falls with the sun; the transport drops the guests off at the airport: all-in-all, a great way to spend that final day.
